Crowns and Bridges
Injuries such as cracks or fractures in your teeth or losing a tooth can hinder the beauty of your smile as well as give you trouble when you speak or eat as well as cause you pain. Here at St. Helena Dental Group, we offer different restorative services to treat any number of dental issues. If you have a cracked or fractured tooth due to an injury or you’ve lost a tooth due to severe decay a dental crown or bridge can help replace your missing tooth or give greater protection to your tooth or teeth once they have been repaired.
Dental Crowns act as a “cap” that is positioned on the top of the tooth to protect the tooth as well as repair the size and shape of the tooth if it has been broken or cracked. Crowns are also used as protection after other dental treatments such as root canals. Dental crowns can be made out of different materials, metals such as gold and silver and metal –free options such as porcelain or ceramic. Porcelain crowns have the advantage of closely matching the color of your natural teeth and still are as strong and resistant as gold or silver crowns.
Dental Bridges provide a “bridge” that secures the replacement teeth in place after losing a tooth or teeth. If you lose a tooth or more it won’t only show when you smile but also when you speak or eat. When you lose a tooth your mouth’s functionality decreases as well as it provides room for adjacent teeth to spread into the empty space and become misaligned. Using dental crowns attached to adjacent teeth, a bridge is placed to secure the replacement teeth and give you back functionality and a beautiful smile.
Both dental crowns and bridges treatments require two appointments. In the first appointment, the doctor will examine your situation and order dental X-rays to determine if a crown or bridge is the best treatment for your problem. An impression of your teeth is taken with a mold and sent to the lab, where a crown or bridge will be custom-made for you. The second appointment will happen once your permanent crown or bridge has arrived and it’s ready to be placed permanently.
Good oral hygiene is strongly recommended so your bridge or crowns can last you for decades and you can smile with confidence.
If you are interested in repairing your smile, our doctors will be happy to discuss with you if a dental crown or bridge is the best option for you. Call us today at (707) 240-8099 to schedule your appointment today!
